A simple question can create an opportunity for a meaningful conversation: Are you OK?

At Central Monitoring Services, we recognised R U OK? Day by taking a moment to come together and check in with the people around us.
Team member Chantel Axiak suggested bringing everyone together over cupcakes—a thoughtful gesture that gave us a chance to pause, have a chat, and spend time with colleagues.
The occasion was a reminder that caring for our team includes making room for conversations about how people are doing.
A Thoughtful Idea From Chantel

Workdays can move quickly. With tasks to complete and responsibilities to manage, it is easy for conversations to stay focused on what needs to happen next.
Chantel’s idea created a reason to step away from that routine for a moment. Sharing cupcakes gave the team an informal setting to gather and connect.
Sometimes, a small gesture helps open the door to a conversation. It gives people a chance to ask how someone is going and take the time to hear their answer.
Thank you, Chantel, for bringing the team together and helping us mark the occasion with care.
Making Space for the People Around Us
We spend a significant part of our lives working, but colleagues may be managing much more than what we see during the day.
Family responsibilities, personal worries, and changes outside work can all be part of someone’s experience. We may not know what another person is going through unless there is an opportunity to talk.
Checking in begins with showing interest and making time. It can be as simple as noticing someone has been quieter than usual or following up on something they mentioned earlier.
A conversation does not need to be elaborate to show that someone matters. Giving a colleague your attention can help make it easier for them to share how they are feeling, if they choose to.
Listening With Care
Asking “Are you OK?” means being willing to listen to the response.
Someone may want to talk, or they may prefer to keep things private. Respecting that choice is part of approaching the conversation with care.
When a person does open up, they do not always need an immediate solution. They may appreciate the chance to speak without being rushed or judged.
At CMS, this occasion reminded us of the value of making time for one another. The same consideration we bring to our work can also shape how we support our colleagues.
Checking In Beyond One Day
R U OK? Day gives us a useful reminder to start a conversation, but we do not need to wait for an annual occasion to ask the question.
There are opportunities to check in throughout the year—with a colleague, friend, family member, or teammate.
A follow-up conversation can matter too. Remembering what someone shared and asking how they are going later shows that the earlier conversation was important to you.
These everyday actions help keep care and connection present beyond a single event.
A Team Moment Worth Sharing
Our photographs capture the CMS team coming together, enjoying the cupcakes, and taking time to connect.
It was a simple gathering with a meaningful purpose. Chantel’s initiative gave us an opportunity to recognise R U OK? Day and reflect on how we look out for the people around us.
Thank you to everyone who joined in, and a special thank you to Chantel for organising the moment.
Whether at work, at home, or among friends, we can each make time to ask, listen, and stay connected.
Who could you check in with today?
